3. Setting Up Your Remote: Step-by-Step
Setting up your XR11 remote is usually quick and easy. There are a few steps to make sure it works with your Xfinity TV Box, your TV, and your sound system (if you have one).
Pairing Your Remote for Voice Control (with your Xfinity TV Box)
This is the easiest way to get your remote ready to talk to your Xfinity TV Box (like the X1 TV Box, Xumo Stream Box, or Flex streaming TV Box).
-
Turn on your TV and make sure your Xfinity TV Box is also on.
-
Point your Voice Remote towards your Xfinity TV Box.
-
Press and Hold the Microphone (Voice) Button.
-
While holding it, say "Program remote." (Speak clearly, like you're talking to a person.)
-
-
Watch your TV screen. You should see on-screen instructions pop up.
-
Follow the on-screen steps. You'll get a message saying your remote is now paired for voice control.
-
Next, you'll likely be asked, "Would you like to control your TV using your remote?" Select "Yes" using the OK button.
-
If prompted, use the number keys to type in the brand name of your TV using the on-screen keyboard, then select OK.
-
Test it out! Try saying "What's on CNN?" or "Watch channel 5."
Controlling Your TV's Power and Volume
After voice pairing, your remote often automatically knows how to control your TV's power and volume. If it doesn't, or if you skipped the voice pairing step, here's how to set it up using a special code:
-
Turn on your TV.
-
Find your TV's brand in the "Important Codes" section at the end of this manual. Find the 5-digit code(s) listed for your TV.
-
Press and hold the Setup button on your remote.
-
Keep holding it until the light at the top of your remote changes from red to green.
-
-
Enter the 5-digit code for your TV brand using the number keys.
-
If the code is correct, the light at the top will blink green twice.
-
If it blinks red then green, the code was not correct. Try the next code listed for your TV brand.
-
-
Point the remote at your TV and press the TV POWER button.
-
If your TV turns off, you've found the right code!
-
If it doesn't turn off, try the next code for your brand, starting again from step 3.
-
-
Once your TV turns off, press the Setup button again briefly to lock in the code.
-
Now, try turning your TV back on with the TV POWER button. Also, test the VOL (Volume) and Mute buttons to make sure they work.
Controlling Your Sound System (Audio Receiver/Soundbar)
If you have a separate sound system (like a soundbar or an audio receiver) and want your Xfinity remote to control its volume and power, follow these steps. You'll need the brand of your sound system.
-
Turn on your sound system.
-
Find your sound system's brand in the "Important Codes" section at the end of this manual. Find the 5-digit code(s) listed for it.
-
Press and hold the Setup button on your remote.
-
Keep holding it until the light at the top of your remote changes from red to green.
-
-
Enter the 5-digit code for your sound system brand using the number keys.
-
If the code is correct, the light at the top will blink green twice.
-
If it blinks red then green, the code was not correct. Try the next code listed for your brand.
-
-
Point the remote at your sound system and press the ALL POWER button.
-
If your sound system turns off, you've found the right code!
-
If it doesn't turn off, try the next code for your brand, starting again from step 3.
-
-
Once your sound system turns off, press the Setup button again briefly to lock in the code.
-
Now, try turning your sound system back on with the ALL POWER button. Also, test the VOL (Volume) and Mute buttons to make sure they work.
Using the Online Code Lookup Tool
The codes in this manual are common ones, but sometimes specific TV or audio device models need different codes. Xfinity has an up-to-date online tool to help you find codes for almost any brand:
-
Go to a computer or smartphone with internet access.
-
Open your internet browser and go to: xfinity.com/remotes
-
Follow the simple instructions on the website to find the codes for your specific devices and how to enter them.
4. Using Voice Commands: Just Talk to Your TV!

5. Understanding Your Remote's Signal (Aim Anywhere)
Your Xfinity XR11 remote uses two types of signals:
-
Infrared (IR): This is the older type of signal, like old TV remotes. It needs a clear line of sight. You have to point the remote directly at your TV or sound system for it to work.
-
Radio Frequency (RF): This is a more modern signal. When your remote is paired with your Xfinity TV Box (like the X1 TV Box, Xumo Stream Box, or Flex streaming TV Box) using RF, you don't need to point the remote at the box. This means you can keep your Xfinity TV Box hidden away in a cabinet, and the remote will still work!
Most of the time, when you do the "Voice Pairing" step, your remote automatically sets up for RF ("Aim Anywhere") control with your Xfinity TV Box. The TV and audio device control (power, volume) still uses IR, so you'll usually need to point the remote at them.
6. Handy Tips and Special Features
Switching TV Inputs
If you have other devices connected to your TV, like a DVD player or a gaming console, you might need to change your TV's "input."
-
Make sure your remote is programmed to control your TV (see "Controlling Your TV's Power and Volume" section).
-
Press the TV Input button at the bottom of your remote.
-
Each press of the TV Input button will cycle through the different connections (like HDMI 1, HDMI 2, Video 1) on your TV. Stop when you see the picture from your other device.
Enabling the 30-Second Skip
This is a hidden trick that lets you skip forward quickly in recorded shows!
-
While watching a show, press the Exit button three times quickly.
-
Then, press the number keys: 0030 (zero, zero, three, zero).
-
You won't see a message, but now, when you're watching a recorded show, you can press the Page Up (Pg Up) button to skip forward 30 seconds at a time!
Factory Resetting Your Remote
If your remote is acting strangely, or you want to completely erase all its settings and start fresh, you can do a factory reset. Be aware that you will need to re-pair it with your TV Box and re-program your TV/sound system after this.
-
Press and hold the Setup button on your remote.
-
Keep holding it until the light at the top of your remote changes from red to green.
-
-
Using the number keys, enter the code: 981.
-
The light at the top will blink green twice to confirm the reset.
-
Now, go back to the "Setting Up Your Remote" section and follow the steps to pair it again.
7. Troubleshooting: Solving Common Problems
Don't worry if your remote isn't working exactly as you expect. Many problems have simple solutions.
Quick Fixes for Your Remote (Common Problems & Solutions)
| Problem | Solution |
| Remote is completely dead, no lights. | Replace batteries. Ensure they are inserted correctly. |
| Remote light flashes red five times. | Low batteries. Replace them right away. |
| Remote won't control TV Box (X1, Xumo, Flex). | Re-pair for Voice Control. Hold the Microphone button and say "Program remote." Follow on-screen steps. Ensure the TV Box is on. |
| Volume/Mute buttons don't work on TV/Soundbar. | Re-program for TV/Audio Device. Use the Setup button and the 5-digit code (see Section 3). Make sure you're pointing the remote at the TV/Soundbar. |
| Voice commands aren't working. | Check pairing. Make sure the remote is paired with the Xfinity TV Box (solid blue light when holding Microphone button). Speak clearly and close to the remote. Ensure the TV Box is on. |
| Remote needs to be pointed directly at TV Box. | Re-enable Aim Anywhere (RF pairing). Hold the Microphone button and say "Program remote." Follow on-screen steps. (XR11 works best with RF for the TV Box.) |
| Remote is behaving strangely/buttons mixed up. | Factory Reset. Perform a factory reset (see Section 6), then re-pair and re-program. |
| Some TV channels/functions don't work via voice. | Make sure you're using the exact channel name (e.g., "NBC" instead of "National Broadcast Company"). Some commands are specific. Try "Remote help" for tips. |
Remote Not Responding
-
Check the Batteries First: This is the most common reason. If the light at the top flashes red five times when you press a button, or doesn't light up at all, replace the batteries.
-
Remove Obstructions: Make sure nothing is blocking the path between your remote and your TV or sound system (if using IR). For the Xfinity TV Box, ensure it's powered on.
-
Are You Pointing It Correctly? Remember, for your TV and sound system, you usually need to point the remote directly at them. For your Xfinity TV Box (if RF-paired), you don't need to point it.
-
Power Cycle Your Devices: Turn off your Xfinity TV Box and TV from the power outlet for a minute, then plug them back in and try again.
Voice Control Not Working
-
Is it Paired for Voice? When you press and hold the Microphone button, does the light at the top of the remote turn solid blue? If not, it's not paired for voice control. Go back to "Pairing Your Remote for Voice Control" in Section 3.
-
Speak Clearly: Speak in a normal voice, clearly, and directly into the top of the remote where the microphone is.
-
Hold and Release: Remember to press and hold the Microphone button while you speak, then release it when you're done.
-
Proximity: Make sure you're within a reasonable distance of your Xfinity TV Box (usually within 15-20 feet for RF).
Volume or Mute Buttons Not Working
-
Is Your Remote Programmed for Your TV/Sound System? These buttons control your TV or separate sound system, not the Xfinity TV Box directly. You need to program your remote with the 5-digit code for your specific TV or audio device. Go back to "Controlling Your TV's Power and Volume" or "Controlling Your Sound System" in Section 3.
-
Test with Device's Original Remote: Does the original remote for your TV or sound system still control the volume? This helps figure out if the problem is with the Xfinity remote or the device itself.
-
Check Mute Status: Make sure your TV or sound system isn't already muted by accident.
Remote Not Controlling TV/Audio Device
-
Is it Programmed? Double-check that you have successfully programmed the remote with the correct 5-digit code for your TV or audio device (see Section 3). Try another code if the first one didn't work.
-
Line of Sight: Make sure you are pointing the remote directly at the TV or audio device, and nothing is blocking the way.
-
Infrared Blocker: Sometimes, very bright lights or other electronics can interfere with the infrared signal. Try turning off nearby devices briefly.
Battery-Related Issues
-
Replacing Batteries: Always replace both AA batteries at the same time. Don't mix old and new batteries. Use good quality alkaline batteries.
-
Checking Battery Level:
-
Hold the Microphone button and say, "Remote settings."
-
On your TV screen, you will see a menu. Look for "Remote Battery Life" to see how much power is left.
-
-
Rapid Battery Drain:
-
If your batteries seem to die quickly, it could be that the voice feature is used very often, which uses more power.
-
If the remote is frequently trying to pair or having trouble communicating, this can also drain batteries.
-
Make sure there are no sticky buttons, as a constantly pressed button will drain the battery.
-
8. Caring for Your Remote
To keep your remote working well for a long time:
-
Keep it Clean: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down your remote regularly. If it's sticky or dirty, you can lightly dampen a cloth with plain water or a small amount of rubbing alcohol. Never spray liquid directly onto the remote.
-
Avoid Liquids: Keep your remote away from spills and wet areas.
-
Protect from Drops: Try not to drop your remote, as this can damage the internal parts.
-
Extreme Temperatures: Don't leave your remote in very hot or very cold places, like in direct sunlight or a freezing car.
-
Battery Leakage: If you plan not to use your remote for a long time, it's a good idea to remove the batteries to prevent them from leaking and damaging the remote.
