1. Introduction to Your Remote

What Your Remote Can Do

Your DIRECTV Stream RC82V remote control is specially designed to give you easy control over your DIRECTV Stream service and connected devices. It uses both Bluetooth (for voice commands and controlling your DIRECTV Stream box without needing to point it directly) and Infrared (IR) technology (for controlling your TV and other audio devices by pointing the remote at them). This means you can:

  • Change channels and adjust volume.

  • Navigate menus and the program guide.

  • Pause, play, fast forward, and rewind.

  • Use your voice to find shows, movies, and even ask questions with Google Assistant.

  • Control the power and volume of your TV or sound system.

Getting Started: What's in the Box

Your remote control typically comes with:

  • The RC82V Remote Control

  • Two AAA Batteries

3. Setting Up Your Remote (Pairing)

Your remote needs to be "paired" with your DIRECTV Stream device so they can communicate properly. This allows for voice control and eliminates the need to point the remote directly at the box.

Initial Pairing with Your DIRECTV Stream Device

When you first get your remote or a new DIRECTV Stream device (like the DIRECTV Stream Box C71KW-200 or C71KW-400, DIRECTV Gemini, Osprey, or Gemini Air):

  1. Insert Batteries: If not already done, pull out the plastic tab sticking out of the battery compartment. If there's no tab, open the battery cover and insert the two AAA batteries, matching the + and symbols.

  2. Turn on Devices: Make sure your DIRECTV Stream device and TV are turned on.

  3. Start Pairing: Point your remote towards your DIRECTV Stream device.

  4. Press and Hold: Press and hold the FAST FORWARD (>>) and REWIND (<<) buttons at the same time for about 3 seconds.

    • You'll see the lights at the top of your remote start to flash.

  5. Follow On-Screen Prompts: Your TV screen should show a message indicating that the remote is pairing. Follow any instructions that appear on your screen to complete the process.

    • Sometimes, it might ask you to enter a few numbers.

Re-pairing Your Remote (If it stops working or you get a new box)

If your remote stops working, or you need to pair it with a different DIRECTV Stream device:

  1. Clear Old Pairing (Important Step):

    • Press and hold the DASH (–) button and the ENTER button (the OK button in the middle of the directional pad) at the same time for about 3 seconds.

    • The lights on your remote will flash, indicating it has "forgotten" its previous connection.

    • Alternatively, you can press and hold the DASH (–) button and the DIAMOND / APPS (♦) button together until the LED lights on the remote blink blue twice.

  2. Start New Pairing:

    • Make sure your DIRECTV Stream device and TV are on.

    • Press and hold the REWIND (<<) and FAST FORWARD (>>) buttons at the same time for about 3 seconds until the lights at the top of the remote start flashing.

    • On your remote, using the number keys, enter 961.

    • Then, press the CHANNEL UP (CH+) button.

    • Now, look at the back or bottom of your DIRECTV Stream device. You'll find a label with an RID number. Enter the last six digits of this RID number using the number keys on your remote.

    • Press the ENTER (OK) button. The light on your remote should flash twice to confirm.

    • Follow any on-screen instructions that may appear.

Checking Remote Control Battery Strength

To quickly see your remote's battery percentage:

  1. Go to your DIRECTV Stream device's menu.

  2. Select Settings.

  3. Go to Remote Control.

  4. Select Active Remote.

  5. Look for "Battery Percentage" on the screen.

4. Controlling Your TV and Other Devices

Your remote can also control the power and volume of your TV or a sound system (like a soundbar or home theater).

Programming Your Remote for Your TV or Sound System

This is usually done directly through your DIRECTV Stream device's on-screen menu:

  1. Turn on the Device: Make sure the TV or sound system you want to control is turned on.

  2. Go to Settings: On your DIRECTV Stream device, go to the Home screen, then select Settings.

  3. Select Remote Control: Choose Remote Control from the settings menu.

  4. Select Program Remote: Choose Program Remote.

  5. Choose Device Type: Select the type of device you want to program (e.g., TV, Speaker System).

  6. Follow On-Screen Prompts: The system will guide you through the process. This often involves selecting your brand and trying out a few codes until your device responds.

Manual Code Entry (If Automatic Programming Fails)

If the on-screen programming doesn't work, or if you prefer to enter a code directly (this method is less common for the RC82V but can be useful for older devices or specific situations):

  1. Find Your Device Code: Look for a list of universal remote codes online for your TV or audio brand. You might find these on the DIRECTV website or the device manufacturer's website.

  2. Power On Device: Turn on the TV or audio device you want to program.

  3. Enter Programming Mode:

    • Press and hold the MUTE button and the EXIT button at the same time until the RED light on your remote turns ON.

    • Then, release both buttons.

  4. Enter Code: Enter the 4- or 5-digit code for your TV or audio device using the number pad on your remote.

  5. Test: Press the POWER button to see if the device turns off. If it does, press it again to turn it back on. Then test the VOLUME UP/DOWN and MUTE buttons.

  6. If it doesn't work: Repeat the steps with a different code for your brand until you find one that works.

5. Voice Control with Google Assistant

Your remote comes with a powerful voice control feature, powered by Google Assistant.

Using Voice Commands

  1. Press and Hold: Press and hold the Voice Search button (the one with the colored Google Assistant logo, usually above the Mute button).

  2. Speak Clearly: While holding the button, speak your command or question clearly into the top of the remote.

    • Examples:

      • "Find action movies"

      • "Go to CNN"

      • "Show me comedies with Tom Hanks"

      • "What's the weather like?"

      • "Open Netflix"

  3. Release Button: Release the button when you're done speaking. Your DIRECTV Stream device will process your command.

Tips for Voice Search

  • Speak naturally: You don't need to shout or speak unnaturally.

  • Be specific: The more specific you are, the better the results.

  • Good connection: Ensure your DIRECTV Stream device has a good internet connection for the best voice search experience.

6. Battery Information

  • Image suggestion 3: Inserting new AAA batteries, showing correct + and - orientation.

  1. Locate Battery Cover: Turn the remote over. You will see a battery compartment cover on the back.

  2. Remove Cover: Slide the battery cover downwards or push the latch and lift it off (depending on the design).

  3. Remove Old Batteries: Take out the old AAA batteries.

  4. Insert New Batteries: Insert two new AAA batteries. Make sure to match the + (positive) and (negative) ends with the diagrams inside the battery compartment. Incorrect insertion can prevent the remote from working.

  5. Replace Cover: Slide the battery cover back on until it clicks securely into place.

  6. Test: Try using your remote to ensure it's working properly.

Common Battery Issues

  • Remote not responding: Often the first sign of low or dead batteries.

  • Sluggish or delayed commands: Commands take longer to register, or you have to press buttons multiple times.

  • Voice control stops working: Voice features require more power, so they might stop working before basic button presses.

  • Remote randomly switches to IR mode: If your remote suddenly requires you to point it directly at the box, it could be a sign of low battery affecting its Bluetooth connection.

  • Red blinking light: The light on your remote might blink red, indicating low battery.

7. Cleaning and Caring for Your Remote

To keep your remote working well and looking good:

  • Wipe Regularly: Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to gently wipe down the remote.

  • For Grime: If needed, you can slightly dampen the cloth with a very small amount of water or a 50/50 mix of rubbing alcohol and water. Do not spray liquid directly onto the remote.

  • Buttons and Crevices: For tight spots around buttons, use a cotton swab lightly dampened with the cleaning solution.

  • Avoid Liquids: Never immerse the remote in water or any other liquid.

  • Protect from Drops: Try to avoid dropping your remote, as this can cause internal damage.

  • Keep Away from Heat: Do not expose the remote to extreme heat or direct sunlight for long periods.

    3. Using the number keys on your remote, enter 981.

    4. The light on your remote will flash 4 times, confirming the reset.

    5. You will then need to re-pair your remote with your DIRECTV Stream device and reprogram it for your TV/audio system (go back to Sections 3 and 4).

  • Why is my remote sluggish or slow to respond?

    • Low Batteries: This is the most common reason. Replace your AAA batteries.

    • Distance/Obstructions: If you're very far from your DIRECTV Stream device or if there are many objects (like furniture or walls) between you and the device, the signal might be weak. Try moving closer or removing obstructions.

    • Interference: Other wireless devices in your home (like Wi-Fi routers, cordless phones, microwaves) can sometimes interfere with the remote's signal. Try moving these devices further away if possible.

Understanding Remote Indicator Lights

The small lights at the top of your remote provide helpful information:

  • Flashing Lights during Pairing: Indicates the remote is in a pairing mode, looking for a device to connect with.

  • Solid Green Light (when holding a button): Your batteries are strong and working well.

  • Fast-Blinking Green Light: Your batteries are getting low and might need replacement soon.

  • Slow, Blinking Green Light or No Light: Your batteries are very low or dead and need to be replaced immediately.

  • Red Blinking Light: This specifically signals that your batteries are low (typically around 10-15% remaining battery life).
