1. Getting Started with Your Remote

1.1 About Your RC65R Remote

Your DIRECTV RC65R remote is a powerful tool that can control up to four different devices in your home entertainment setup. This includes your DIRECTV receiver, your television, and two other audio/video devices like a DVD player, VCR, or sound system. It can work in two ways:

  • Infrared (IR) Mode: This is like a TV remote you're used to. You need to point the remote directly at the device for it to work.

  • Radio Frequency (RF) Mode: If your DIRECTV receiver supports it, this mode allows you to control your DIRECTV box from anywhere in your home, even without pointing the remote at it. This is very handy!

This remote can also replace older DIRECTV remotes like the RC65RX, RC66RX, RC21, RC24, RC30, and RC64.

1.2 Understanding the Lights on Your Remote

Look at the top of your remote, above the "TV INPUT" button. You'll see four small lights, one under each word: DIRECTV, AV1, AV2, and TV. These lights tell you important things:

  • Which device you're controlling: When you slide the switch at the very top, the light under the chosen device (DIRECTV, AV1, AV2, or TV) will glow.

  • During Programming: These lights will flash to tell you if your remote understood your commands or if a step was successful.

  • Battery Strength:

  • If the light is solid green when you press a button, your batteries are strong.

  • If the light blinks quickly, your batteries are getting low and might need replacing soon.

  • If the light blinks slowly or doesn't light up at all, it's time to change your batteries!

1.3 Installing or Replacing Batteries

Your remote uses two AA batteries.

  1. Open the Battery Cover: On the back of the remote, look for the battery cover. Push down on the little arrow or tab, and slide the cover downwards to open it.

  2. Remove Old Batteries: Take out any old batteries.

  3. Insert New Batteries: Place two new AA alkaline batteries into the compartment. Make sure to match the + (plus) and - (minus) signs inside the compartment with the + and - ends of your batteries. This is very important for the remote to work.

  4. Close the Cover: Slide the battery cover back up until it clicks into place.

Once you replace the batteries, your remote should remember all its settings, so you usually don't need to reprogram it.

2. Getting to Know Your Remote Control Buttons

Here's a breakdown of what each button on your RC65R remote does.

3. Setting Up Your Remote

To make your remote control your devices, you need to "program" it. This teaches the remote which codes to send to your TV and other devices.

3.1 Programming Your DIRECTV Receiver (IR Mode)

This is the most common way to set up your remote for your DIRECTV receiver. You'll need to point the remote at your receiver for it to work.

  1. Turn on your DIRECTV Receiver.

  2. Find your DIRECTV Receiver's 5-digit code. Look for the model number on the back or bottom of your receiver (e.g., H24, HR44, HR54, HS17, C61K, D12). Then find the matching 5-digit code in the "Code Lists" section of this manual (Section 6.2).

  3. Slide the Mode switch at the top of your remote to the DIRECTV position.

  4. Hold down MUTE and SELECT at the same time. Keep holding them until the green light under "DIRECTV" flashes two times. Then, let go of both buttons.

  5. Enter the 5-digit code for your DIRECTV receiver using the number keys on the remote. After you enter the code, the green light under "DIRECTV" should flash two times again.

  6. Test it: Aim your remote at your DIRECTV receiver and press the PWR (Power) button. Your DIRECTV receiver should turn off.

  • If it turns off: Great! You're done with this step.

  • If it doesn't turn off: Repeat steps 3 to 6, trying the other 5-digit codes for DIRECTV receivers listed in Section 6.2, until you find the one that works.

3.2 Programming Your TV

Now let's program your remote to control your TV's power and volume.

  1. Turn on your TV.

  2. Find your TV's 5-digit code. Look up your TV's brand (e.g., Samsung, Sony, LG) in the "Common TV Codes" table (Section 6.3). You might find several codes for your brand.

  3. Slide the Mode switch at the top of your remote to the TV position.

  4. Hold down MUTE and SELECT at the same time. Keep holding them until the green light under "TV" flashes two times. Then, let go of both buttons.

  5. Enter the 5-digit code for your TV using the number keys on the remote. After you enter the code, the green light under "TV" should flash two times again.

  6. Test it: Aim your remote at your TV and press the PWR (Power) button. Your TV should turn off.

  • If it turns off: Great! You're done with this step. Now try the VOL (Volume) and MUTE buttons to make sure they work.

  • If it doesn't turn off: Repeat steps 3 to 6, trying the other 5-digit codes for your TV brand, until you find the correct one.

3.3 Programming Other Devices (AV1 and AV2)

You can program your remote to control two other devices, such as a DVD player, VCR, or a stereo receiver.

  1. Turn on the device you want to program (e.g., your DVD player).

  2. Find the device's 5-digit code. Look up the brand of your device in the relevant "Code Lists" section (DVD Player Codes in 6.4, VCR Codes in 6.5, or Audio Receiver Codes in 6.6).

  3. Slide the Mode switch to either the AV1 or AV2 position. Choose one that isn't already controlling a device.

  4. Hold down MUTE and SELECT at the same time. Keep holding them until the green light under your chosen mode (AV1 or AV2) flashes two times. Then, let go of both buttons.

  5. Enter the 5-digit code for your device. After you enter the code, the green light under the chosen mode should flash two times again.

  6. Test it: Aim your remote at the device and press the PWR (Power) button. The device should turn off.

  • If it turns off: Great! Try playing a DVD/tape or adjusting the volume (if it's an audio device) to make sure other functions work.

  • If it doesn't turn off: Repeat steps 3 to 6, trying other 5-digit codes for that brand, until you find the correct one.

3.4 If a Code Doesn't Work: Trying the Code Search Method

If you can't find a code that works for your TV or other device, you can try the "Code Search" method. This tells the remote to search through its entire list of codes until it finds one that works for your device.

  1. Turn on the device you want to program (TV, DVD player, etc.).

  2. Slide the Mode switch to the correct position (TV, AV1, or AV2).

  3. Hold down MUTE and SELECT at the same time. Keep holding them until the green light under the chosen mode flashes two times. Then, let go of both buttons.

  4. Enter 9-9-1 using the number keys. The green light under the chosen mode will flash two times.

  5. Press and release the CHAN ▲ (Channel Up) button slowly and repeatedly. Each time you press it, the remote sends a new code.

  • IMPORTANT: Point the remote at your device while doing this. As soon as your device turns OFF, stop pressing the CHAN ▲ button!

  1. Press and release the SELECT button. The green light under the chosen mode will flash two times. This saves the code that worked.

  2. Test it: Try the PWR (Power), VOL (Volume), and MUTE buttons to ensure they work correctly. If they don't, you might need to repeat the Code Search from step 5, as you might have gone past the correct code.

4. Using Your Remote's Special Features

4.1 Using RF (Radio Frequency) Mode with Your DIRECTV Receiver

RF mode lets you control your DIRECTV receiver without pointing the remote at it. This is great if your receiver is in a cabinet or another room. Not all DIRECTV receivers can use RF mode. Compatible DIRECTV receivers include the H20, H21, HR20, HR21, HR21PRO, H23, HR23, H24, HR24, H25, R15, and R16.

Important Note for Genie and Genie Mini Devices: If you have a Genie (like HR44, HR54, HS17) or a Genie Mini Client (C41, C51, C61, C61K, C41W, C61W), the RC65R remote will only work in IR mode with these devices. It cannot be set up for RF mode with a Genie or Genie Mini.

To Activate RF Mode (if your receiver supports it):

  1. Find your DIRECTV Receiver's "Receiver ID" (RID) number. This is a 12-digit number usually found on a sticker on the back or bottom of your receiver. Write down the last six digits of this number.

  • Tip: On some receivers (like HR20), you might need to attach a separate RF antenna to the coaxial connector on the back of the receiver.

  1. Slide the Mode switch to the DIRECTV position.

  2. Hold down MUTE and SELECT at the same time until the green light under "DIRECTV" flashes two times. Then, let go of both buttons.

  3. Using the number keys, enter 9-6-1. The green light will flash two times after you press the last number.

  4. Press and release the CHAN ▲ (Channel Up) button. The green light will flash two times again.

  5. Enter the last six digits of your Receiver ID (RID) number using the number keys.

  6. Press and release the SELECT button. The green light will flash two times.

Your remote should now be working in RF mode with your DIRECTV receiver. You no longer need to point it at the receiver.

To Deactivate RF Mode:

If you want to go back to IR mode for your DIRECTV receiver, follow these steps:

  1. Slide the Mode switch to the DIRECTV position.

  2. Hold down MUTE and SELECT at the same time until the green light under "DIRECTV" flashes two times. Then, let go of both buttons.

  3. Using the number keys, enter 9-6-1. The green light will flash two times.

  4. Press and release the CHAN ▼ (Channel Down) button. The green light will flash two times.

Your remote should now be back in IR mode for your DIRECTV receiver.

4.2 Locking Volume to Your TV or Other Device

You can set up your remote so that the VOL (Volume) and MUTE buttons always control your TV or another audio device, no matter which mode (DIRECTV, AV1, AV2) the slider switch is on.

  1. Program your remote to control your TV or audio device first (see Sections 3.2 and 3.3).

  2. Slide the Mode switch to the device that currently controls your volume (e.g., if your TV volume works, slide it to TV).

  3. Hold down MUTE and SELECT at the same time until the green light under the chosen mode flashes two times. Then, let go of both buttons.

  4. Using the number keys, enter 9-9-3. The green light will flash two times.

  5. Press and release the SELECT button. The green light will flash two times.

Now, your VOL and MUTE buttons should always control the device you chose, even when the mode switch is set to DIRECTV or another AV setting.

To Unlock Volume Control:

If you want the volume to only work for the device currently selected by the mode switch (its default behavior):

  1. Slide the Mode switch to the DIRECTV position.

  2. Hold down MUTE and SELECT at the same time until the green light under "DIRECTV" flashes two times. Then, let go of both buttons.

  3. Using the number keys, enter 9-9-3. The green light will flash two times.

  4. Press and release the VOL+ (Volume Up) button. The green light will flash four times.

The volume control is now unlocked and will only work for the device selected by the mode switch.

4.3 Resetting Your Remote to Factory Settings

If you're having a lot of trouble, or you just want to start fresh, you can reset your remote back to its original factory settings. This will erase all programmed codes.

  1. Hold down MUTE and SELECT at the same time. Keep holding them until the green light flashes two times. Then, let go of both buttons.

  2. Using the number keys, enter 9-8-1. The green light will flash four times.

Your remote is now reset. You will need to reprogram it for your DIRECTV receiver, TV, and any other devices.

5. Troubleshooting Common Problems

This section will help you solve the most common issues you might have with your remote.

5.1 Quick Reference: Common Problems & Solutions

Problem

What to Check / Try

Remote not working at all

1. Check batteries (replace if light blinks slowly or not at all). 2. Make sure mode switch is on correct device (DIRECTV, TV, AV1, AV2). 3. Point remote directly at device (for IR). 4. Clear any obstructions.

Volume/Mute buttons don't work

1. Make sure mode switch is on TV or the correct audio device. 2. Check if volume is locked to another device (see Section 4.2 to unlock). 3. Reprogram TV/audio device (Section 3.2, 3.3).

Remote not changing DIRECTV channels (RF)

1. Is your DIRECTV receiver RF-capable? 2. Is RF mode activated correctly (Section 4.1)? 3. Check batteries (low batteries can affect RF). 4. For Genie/Genie Mini, RC65R only works in IR.

Specific button not working

1. Ensure mode switch is on the correct device. 2. If it's a "playback" button (Play, Pause, etc.), make sure the device is on and has content. 3. Try resetting the remote and reprogramming it (Section 4.3).

Green light on remote acts strangely

Flashes slowly/no light: Replace batteries. Flashes twice: Normal during programming. Flashes four times: Normal for reset or volume unlock.

Remote needs to be reprogrammed often

1. Ensure you're following programming steps exactly. 2. Check battery strength. 3. If problem continues, remote may be faulty (consider replacing).

Receiver not responding (even after remote fix)

1. Restart Receiver: Press the red reset button (often inside the access card door or on the side of the receiver) or unplug the receiver for 15 seconds, then plug it back in. 2. Ensure nothing is blocking receiver's front panel.

5.2 My Remote Isn't Responding

This is the most common issue. Here's what to check:

  • Check the Batteries First: This is almost always the answer!

  • Press any button on the remote. Does the green light under the mode switch (DIRECTV, TV, AV1, AV2) light up?

  • If the light blinks slowly or doesn't light up at all, replace your batteries (see Section 1.3).

  • Even if the light comes on, weak batteries can cause problems. If you haven't changed them in a while, try new ones.

  • Is the Mode Switch Correct? Make sure the slider at the top of the remote is set to the device you want to control (e.g., DIRECTV to control your DIRECTV box, TV to control your TV).

  • Are You Pointing Correctly? (for IR mode): If your remote is in IR mode (most common), you need to point the front of the remote directly at the device you want to control. Make sure nothing is blocking the path between the remote and the device.

  • Restart Your DIRECTV Receiver: Sometimes the receiver itself needs a fresh start.

  • Find the small red reset button on your DIRECTV receiver. It's often inside the access card door on the front, or sometimes on the side or back. Press it firmly.

  • Alternatively, unplug your DIRECTV receiver from its power outlet for 15 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait for it to fully start up.

5.3 Volume or Mute Buttons Don't Work Correctly

  • Is the Remote in the Right Mode? Ensure the mode switch at the top is set to TV or the correct audio device (AV1 or AV2) if you want to control its volume.

  • Is Volume Locked? Your remote might be set to "lock" the volume to a specific device. This is common.

  • To unlock the volume (so it only controls the device selected by the mode switch): Follow the steps in Section 4.2 under "To Unlock Volume Control."

  • To lock the volume to your TV or sound system: Follow the steps in Section 4.2 under "Locking Volume to Your TV or Other Device."

  • Is Your TV/Audio Device Programmed? Make sure you've successfully programmed your remote to control your TV (Section 3.2) or audio device (Section 3.3). The volume won't work if the remote doesn't know the code for that device.

5.4 My Remote Won't Change Channels or Interact with My DIRECTV Receiver in RF Mode

  • Is Your Receiver RF-Capable? Not all DIRECTV receivers can use RF mode. Common RF-capable models include the H20, H21, HR20, HR21, HR23, HR24, H25, R15, R16.

  • Genie/Genie Mini Exception: Remember, if you have a Genie (HR44, HR54, HS17) or Genie Mini (C41, C51, C61, etc.), the RC65R remote will only work in IR mode with these devices. It cannot be set up for RF. You'll need to point the remote directly at them.

  • Is RF Mode Activated Correctly? Double-check the steps in Section 4.1 "To Activate RF Mode." Make sure you're using the last six digits of your Receiver ID (RID) correctly.

  • Weak Batteries: Low batteries can sometimes cause issues with RF communication before IR. Try replacing your batteries.

  • Reset the Remote: If you're still having trouble, reset your remote to factory settings (Section 4.3) and then try activating RF mode again carefully.

5.5 My Remote Seems to Have Other Issues

  • Specific Button Not Working:

  • Ensure the mode switch is set to the correct device.

  • If it's a playback button (Play, Pause), make sure the device (DVD player, DVR) is turned on and has content playing.

  • Try resetting the remote to factory settings (Section 4.3) and reprogramming it.

  • Remote Needs Reprogramming Often: If your remote keeps losing its programming, it might be due to very low batteries or an issue with the remote itself. Try new, good-quality batteries first.

  • "Error Codes" or Messages: The remote itself doesn't show error codes, but your DIRECTV receiver might. If you see an error message on your TV screen (e.g., "771," "775"), look up that specific code on the DIRECTV website or in your receiver's manual.

6. Code Lists

These are the 5-digit codes you'll need to program your RC65R remote to control your DIRECTV receiver, TV, DVD player, and other devices.

6.1 Important Note About Codes

  • Multiple Codes: Many brands have several codes. If the first code you try doesn't work, try the next one for that brand until you find one that works.

  • Code Search: If none of the codes for your brand work, use the "Code Search" method described in Section 3.4.

  • Online Code Finder: For the most up-to-date and complete list, you can usually visit the official DIRECTV website and look for a "remote code finder" tool.

7. Cleaning and Taking Care of Your Remote

Keeping your remote clean will help it last longer and work better.

  • General Cleaning:

  • Remove the Batteries: Always take the batteries out before cleaning.

  • Wipe it Down: Use a soft, lint-free cloth that is slightly damp with rubbing alcohol or a gentle electronic cleaner. Do not spray liquid directly onto the remote. Spray it onto the cloth first, then wipe.

  • Get Rid of Dust/Crumbs: Use a can of compressed air to blow out any dust or crumbs that might be stuck around the buttons.

  • Sticky Buttons: If buttons feel sticky, gently clean around them with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.

  • Avoid Liquids and Extreme Temperatures: Do not submerge your remote in water. Keep it away from very hot or very cold places, and out of direct sunlight for long periods. If your remote gets wet, remove the batteries immediately and let it air dry completely for several hours (or even a day or two) before putting batteries back in.

  • Handling: Try not to drop your remote, as this can damage the internal parts.
